Otherwise, all the work the AFL claims it is doing at club level in a bid to create a better environment for women across all levels of the game will be diluted. What is the point of explaining to young footballers that it is wrong to capture inappropriate images of women and send them around when the league itself is saying there are exceptions?
The exception is Bingle – apparently fair game because of her dubious scruples and connections. Most football commentators who salivated on Friday at the revelation that Bingle was warned Fevola was married when she had claimed the opposite failed to mention Fevola’s role in the affair. Again, all available evidence suggests that in 2006, he certainly didn’t act as though his marriage meant very much.
Back in 2003 – seven years ago almost to the day – when two St Kilda footballers were being investigated for sexual assault, the Saints held a press conference and subtly discredited the alleged victims. How far have we really come since then? The nun and the prostitute scenarios seem far too appropriate in this case.
