Now it emerges that the billionaire peer is willing to pay tax here so that he can keep his seat in the Lords.
Since he will almost certainly have to fork out an enormous sum to the Inland Revenue, this decision will entail a considerable sacrifice. The multi-millionaire Labour peer Lord Paul has also placed continued service in the Lords above the interests of his bank balance.
The five refuseniks, by contrast, have put their own financial well-being first. Since none of them makes much of a contribution in the Lords, their resignations may not be seen as a huge loss.
All of them would seem to spend a large part of the year abroad. Lord Laidlaw, for example, is resident in Monte Carlo, where two years ago he held a party with male and female prostitutes that persuaded him he was in need of treatment for ’sex addiction’.
