Against my expectations, I became enthused. Re-reading my script, I found how balanced about Sydney I’d been. One of the few advantages of growing older is an increasing immunity to what other people think of you. That and the fact I live more than 1000 kilometres north gave me a feeling of liberation. I decided the way I depicted Sydney was going to head in a more scurrilous direction.

One aspect of Sydney that has changed for the worst is the media. Mike’s bimbo girlfriend, played by Sally Singleton, is even more struck by celebrity than the original, fed by a media that has galloped in the direction of lifestyle, gossip, sensationalism and triviality since 1987.

David Williamson is a playwright. One Night in Emerald City will be performed at Sydney Theatre tomorrow night.
