RYDALMERE, “the red light capital of western Sydney’’, is set to make the transition from boobs to bytes.
Campaigning councillor Michael McDermott wants to see the suburb which has nine brothels, one sex shop and a gay men’s club transformed from a red light district to a technology park.
He was supported by his fellow councillors in calling for a council report on ways the area could be rezoned to force out the sex-related businesses.
“Residents are fed up. Some live within 50m of these places which are bringing undesirables into the area,’’ Cr McDermott told the Advertiser.

Cr McDermott said that with its close proximity to the University of Western Sydney, Rydalmere should be a smart, rather than smutty, town.
“The only growth industry here is the sex industry, making Rydalmere the sex capital of western Sydney,’’ Cr McDermott said.
