Sydney Strip Clubs: Madam Carmen
December 18, 2011
I started my professional career in drag as a female impersonator in Sydney’s Kings Cross, in 1958 doing belly dancing and dancing with snakes. Of course it was all illegal and run by the mafia but in those days you were just a queen that got on with things. The Cross was a fascinating place full of sex workers, drag queens, male whores, curb crawlers, transvestites, strippers and dancers. It was an exciting place to be the first Maori drag queen from New Zealand.
I worked in clubs such as the Jewel Box as a female impersonator and then, when the famous Australian drag queen Carlotta opened Les Girls, I went to work there…I was also one of the regular performers at Sydney’s first gay bar called the Purple Onion.

6.25am: Carmen Rupe, legend, dies in Sydney
…
Born into a family of 13 children in 1935 on a Taumarunui farm as Trevor Rupe, Carmen-to-be was dressing in his mother’s clothing at age 11. As soon as he could leave school Rupe headed to Auckland and Wellington and experimented with drag performances while doing compulsory military training and working as a nurse and waiter, before everything changed when she arrived in Sydney’s Kings Cross in the late 50s.
…
Carmen also opened the Balcony strip club where Wellington’s library now stands, and with the backing of Sir Bob Jones she ran for mayor in 1977, with the slogan “Get in Behind” and promising gay marriage and legalised brothels.
In 1979 Carmen’s jaunt at home ended and she returned to Sydney, the city where she lived out her final years. She became a much-adored and respected senior citizen. In 2008 she led the Decade of the Divas float at the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras aboard her mobility scooter… topless. Robin Waerea says Carmen expressed a wish to be buried at Sydney’s Rookwood Maori Cemetery.

A CLEVER idea: a nominally straight bar becomes a gay venue for an evening, giving Sydney’s gay men and lesbians an opportunity to drink in entirely new surroundings. Well-organised and done with the permission of the bar owners, FagTag events have been staged at Opera Bar, The Eastern Hotel in Bondi Junction and even a Kings Cross strip club. See more at fagtag.com.au.
3. Beach Rd Hotel, Bondi Beach
WANT to see the cool side of Bondi, away from the touristy stuff? Lob into the Beach Rd Hotel, a second home to the hip young things of the eastern suburbs. Sundays go off in the beer garden we even hear of one 33-year-old man from Greystanes who makes the commute because the vibe is so good.

GLORIOUSLY tacky, the walls of this tucked-away King Cross restaurant are festooned with a bazillion hats. Walk in, select one, and let your inner child out for a grown-up night of fun. A nice alternative to the oh-so-serious world of Sydney dining.
Sydney Strip Clubs: The Sequined Menace
December 2, 2011
Kate O’Halloran talks to the crew behind The Sequined Menace – Glitta Supernova, Fancy Piece and Pluto Savage – about Sydney’s underground scene, queer cabaret and what we can expect from this powerhouse of performers’ new venture.
…
“In the early 90s I started work as a stripper doing the rounds of all the strip clubs in Sydney. This also happened to coincide with my crew of friends stampeding into the club scene with our acid colour and over the top antics pushing our looks and selves beyond our limitations,” she said.
…
It was out of this explosion of creative energy that Glitta, along with Sex Intents (and later Imogen Kelly and Meredith Williams), conceived of ‘Gurlesque’ as a “strip club for women”. Glitta could have had no idea that Gurlesque would run for ten years and become the trailblazing event that really cemented the place of burlesque within queer Sydney history.

Sydney Strip Clubs: I’ma supermodel, get me out of here!
November 17, 2011
I’ve always said it’s not about winning, it’s about being acknowledged for what you do. This is a prime example that if you work hard, you can achieve anything. Not many people in western Sydney get acknowledged for their contribution and achievements and it’s great to see change is in the air.
…
I am now the coordinator at Canley Vale’s newest LGBT-friendly night, ‘It’s Showtime’ at Richards On The Park, the last Saturday of the month (November 26) from 9pm, shows at 10.30 and 11.30. This fabulous new night is opening up the stage to the drag queens of western Sydney, as well as strippers, games and much more!
