Sydney Massage Parlors: Sex does sell
March 29, 2012
A Sexpo event – a travelling “sexuality and adult lifestyle exhibition” held recently at Sydney’s Darling Harbour – attracted more than 50,000 attendees.
“Some of the exhibitors had their most profitable trading weekend in [the] last 10 years,” says Sexpo’s general manager, Rob Godwin. Many stalls at Sexpo sell sex toys; other desires were catered to at the event, with the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, where the event was held, experiencing a brisk trade in food and beverages, too, Godwin says.
His comments come at a time sex work in NSW has been described as the healthiest sex industry ever documented.

A shop owner received the shock of her life after a two vehicle accident in Maroubra this afternoon.
At around 1.00pm it’s understood a small van collided with a truck on the intersection of Garden St, and Maroubra Rd, Maroubra.
The car continued on through the intersection, spun around and collided with the massage parlour.
Vicky, the manager of the shop, was on the phone at the time when she heard a loud “boom”. She rushed outside to see what had happened.
The vehicle did not completely enter the shop and no one was inside having a massage at the time of the accident.
NSW Fire & Rescue assisted with removing the smashed glass and taped off the affected area.
The shop remains closed until it can be made safe.

A Sydney man allegedly stole $1.3 million from Australia Post in a scam involving the sale of stamps and bulk mail, a court has heard.
Tim Alexander Greenland was the licensee of the Millers Point post office between 2001 and 2009 when the theft occurred, the Sydney District Court heard today.
Mr Greenland, who also owns an “erotic massage parlour“, pleaded guilty to one count of theft in November last year.
Sarah McNaughton, SC, for the Commonwealth DPP, said: “It is alleged that he pretended to sell stamps … He was getting reimbursed for stamp sales that he didn’t make.”
Mr Greenland allegedly processed transactions for sales of bulk postage stamps without affixing the stamps to the items posted.
He would allegedly claim a 13 per cent commission from Australia Post for each stamp.

December 20, 2011
Friends and family of Kiwi drag queen Carmen Rupe gathered in Sydney today to farewell her.
As a gay rights advocate, Rupe led a very public life fighting for equal rights for a marginalised community.
Coco Devine, a friend of Rupe’s, said she encouraged other trans-gender people to stand up for what they believe in.
“She taught us to be people and remember who we are.”
Rupe died of kidney failure last Thursday.
Although her loved ones said goodbye to her today, Rupe’s influence still remains.
“It’s a good time to say goodbye to a woman who was a trailblazer in so many ways for rights for both trans-gender,” Pindi-Rochelle Hurring, a friend of Rupe’s, said.

December 11, 2011
THE 14-year-old Australian boy caught with cannabis in Bali will be released from detention later today and is expected to arrive back in Sydney early tomorrow.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the teenager’s family had asked for details of his return to remain private, but it was ”welcome news” that the boy was hours from freedom.

Sydney Massage Parlors: Human trafficking prompts raids on brothels
October 13, 2011
A TASKFORCE of police and immigration inspectors have raided Sydney brothels in the past month as part of a wide investigation into Asian women being trafficked into the sex industry.
Properties in Gladesville and Eastwood were targeted by a team of 18 investigators in a night operation on September 22. Both businesses – where at least 15 women worked – are suspected to have links to an organised crime gang based in Hong Kong.
The raids, which are part of an ongoing inquiry, come as figures obtained by the Herald show the issue of trafficking is a particular problem in NSW.
