Elena Jeffreys, president of Scarlet Alliance, the Australian Sex Workers Association, is addressing this year’s F Conference, a conference on feminism held in Sydney. Jeffreys, sitting between Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick and academic Catharine Lumby and wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “SLUTS UNITE”, is met with rousing cheers from the 500-strong audience as she lists some of the oppressions faced by sex workers. “But,” she goes on, there is another “extreme oppression that we face … the oppression that anti-sex work feminists have wrought upon our workplaces.”

Under the state trauma plan, introduced in March, paramedics in Sydney were ordered to take patients with multiple injuries to Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore, St George, Westmead and Liverpool hospitals – even if they were hurt in the city or eastern suburbs.
But the plan is now in disarray after senior doctors from St Vincent’s successfully lobbied to have the hospital reinstated as a trauma centre. Staff at Nepean Hospital are also pushing for an upgrade, arguing that Westmead Hospital is not coping with a surge in the number of trauma patients since the plan was introduced.
…
Nepean was stripped of its trauma status because it could not maintain a 24-hour neurosurgical roster after one of its neurosurgeons, Suresh Nair, was charged with the cocaine-related murder of a Brazilian student. Nair was also charged with manslaughter over the death of a prostitute.
…
The director of trauma at St Vincent’s, Tony Grabs, said the plan had been short-sighted because it did not take into account inner Sydney’s unique needs, particularly around Kings Cross where alcohol-fuelled violence was common.

HOLROYD Mayor John Perry hopes to overturn fellow councillors’ decision to reject a brothel which he claimed would see ratepayers’ money wasted in court.
The councillors voted 5-4 to reject the brothel development application last week, proposed for the industrial area on Percival Rd, Guildford.
The industrial unit at the centre of the DA had been used as a swinger’s club and is vacant.
The applicant proposes to operate the brothel seven days per week and employ seven staff.
Holroyd Council officers recommended the councillors approve the DA as it is in an acceptable area for brothels according to state legislation.
However Cr Vasee Rajadurai turned against his Labor peers and voted against the brothel, which proved the difference.
Cr Perry, an independent who voted to approve the DA, rebuked his peer after the vote.
…
Others who voted against the brothel had a similar stance.

… NSW police have identified a group of drug importing Sydney port workers with government maritime security cards who have been active since 2004.
…
It has led to major ecstasy, heroin and crystal methamphetamine drug busts across Australia, the biggest-ever drug bust on the Pacific island group of Tonga and the discovery in May last year of a bikie armoury in Sydney – including automatic weapons and imitation police equipment.
…
Despite Hoffman severely damaging the bikie group, the Comancheros have continued establishing a foothold in Melbourne under the control of local club controller, Amad ”Jay” Malkhoun, a convicted heroin trafficker with interests in several Melbourne strip clubs.
One of Hoffman’s key targets is Hakan Ayik, 32, from Sydney, who is understood to have worked as the local manager of an international drug syndicate with strong links to the triads and which used domestic criminal networks, including outlaw bikie clubs, as distributors and to provide muscle.

SYDNEY, Australia — They see themselves variously as “filling a gap” in Australian politics and “sticking it up” those American-style neo-cons of Australian society. And while sober discussion of immigration, workers’ rights and economic policy has thus far trumped talk of pornography and pole dancing, the misfits of the Australian Sex Party (ASP) are campaigning voraciously across the country in the lead-up to the Aug. 21 general elections. With their mandate of “keeping the government out of our bedrooms,” ASP’s policies generally revolve around, you guessed it, sex.
…
Much support, both financially and vocally, for the party in general has come from within the adult industry. Party president Fiona Patten doesn’t hide her strong ties with small businesses and professionals specializing in the naughty side of society. ASP even launched a funding drive aimed at the United States adult entertainment industry, including a personal request to Larry Flynt for financial support.
Heidi Zeugn, 39, runs a boutique selling adult products in a trendy suburb in Sydney’s inner west. The shop displays ASP posters in their entrance and party literature on the counter.
